Night Of Spectacles

The Night of Spectacles is a design competition that I just competed in.
The challenge was to create a look and incorporate recycled eye glasses, or eye glass lenses into 40% of your design. I was thrilled with the idea and couldn't wait to get started!
I completed the dress and was ready to put the lenses on, everything was going great!.. Until I received a gigantic box of eyeglasses! It was more like a time capsule from the 80's; they were all hideous and huge, so I decided to just use the lenses. Finally, after several mental breakdowns and sleepless nights, this is what I created.

I won!!!

All of my hard work paid off, because I won first place in the competition!

I was inspired by the grace and drama of a school of fish swimming perfectly synchronized in the ocean.  At first glance a school of fish appears as a shimmering wall filled with mystery. In the middle of the silent, vast ocean, this is a very ethereal and mystifying thing to see. That is exactly what I wanted my dress to exude. As my model walks and the dress moves the shimmering lenses create the illusion of a swimming school of fish.

Lights, Camera, Action

Recently I was asked to make a costume for the school play, Something's Afoot. The Character was a very rich, attention seeking woman living during the 1930's, so instantly I was intrigued and couldn't wait to get started! I love everything about the fashion of the 30's!
This is what I came up with!

LET THEM EAT CUPCAKES

VANILLA CUPCAKES with RASPBERRY FILLING and VANILLA-ORANGE BUTTERCREAM

Fashion will always have 1st place in my heart, but baking is a very close second. I love to bake, it is something that I have been doing as long as I can remember. My sister and I would always bake together when we were younger and we still do today. I enjoy baking because it is extremely therapeutic, it is a wonderful thing to do after a long hectic day.

One of my favorite things to bake are cupcakes, first of all they are adorable, but also there are so many things you can do with them!

These cupcakes are the perfect way to welcome spring. They have a lively citrus buzz, with a delicious creamy frosting and center. You cannot go wrong with these cupcakes!

In order to make these little treats you will need:

    For the batter:
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2/3 cup vegetable or canola oil
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 teaspoons vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tablespoon orange zest*
    For the frosting:
  • 1 1/2 cups softened butter
  • 1 1/2 to 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tablespoon orange zest*
    For the Filling:
  • 1 package softened cream cheese
  • 1/2 cup raspberry jam

* You will need 1 orange total for the orange zest, use half for the batter, and half for the frosting

How to make them:
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Line two cupcake pans with cupcake liners, set aside.
In one bowl combine all of the dry ingredients (flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt). In another bowl combine the wet ingredients (oil, water, vanilla, and vinegar). With an electric mixer, slowly add the dry ingredient to the wet, about 1/4 of cup at a time, until it is completely mixed. Add the orange zest. The batter should be a little bit thinner than a pancake batter.
Fill your cupcake pans about 2/3 of the way full. Put them in the oven for 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean when inserted into the middle of the cupcake.

Meanwhile its time to make the filling and the frosting.
To make the filling combine the softened cream cheese with the raspberry jam until evenly mixed.

For the frosting, combine the softened butter, powdered sugar, vanilla, and orange zest until smooth and creamy.

Now for the fun part, when the cupcakes are done, let them cool completely. Once they are cooled take a sharp parring knife and cut an upside-down cone out of the center of the cupcake, about 2/3rds way deep. Put the raspberry filling in a piping bag, or in a plastic zip-lock bag with a small hole cut in one of the corners (cut the hole after you put the filling in). With the piping bag fill each hole in your cupcakes until the filling reaches the top of your cupcake.
Then frost your cupcakes, place a fresh raspberry on top, and enjoy!

NEW YORK MINUTE

I was in New York this weekend, It is my favorite place in the world and I am happy to go there whenever I can. I did a lot of window shopping at Bergdorf Goodman, and along 5th avenue, everything is so beautiful. Walking through Bergdorf's is the equivalent of walking through a museum. I also went to soho and just walked around enjoying my favorite city.

MUSIC THE WAY IT SHOULD BE

For Christmas I received this record player from my sister, she is the best gift giver! With It I also received a Beirut album on vinyl, and you know how much I love Beirut! I can't wait to buy more records to play on it, do I hear another shopping fetish about to form? I think so.

TIGER EYE

This is the necklace that I got from Kudzu (mentioned in the previous post) It has a tiger eye stone, and is attached to a suede string. I love it because of its very unique qualities and the fact that you can wear it long or short!

KUDZU

Upon one of my hunts for vintage clothing and jewelry, I came across a place called Kudzu Antique Market, it is amazing. The place is bursting at the seams with vintage jewelry, clothing, and everything else antique. It has been there for years and it has almost a museum quality to it in the way of everything there being very unique. Every room has its own special quality and theme, one room would be filled with fur coats and shoes, while another would be filled with funky 60's furniture, or records from throughout the years. Every object there was a good find. I must have spent at least two hours in there, and I only came out with one necklace, even though I wanted to buy a million things! It was a wonderful and fun place to go, and I will definitely keep going back!

CAT LADY

One of the many things that I love are cats, so when I found this cat printed graphic tee I had to get it! Also, black and white is probably my favorite combination of colors to wear, Its very clean and simple, yet it is still very modern and has a bit of an edge to it.

SNAPSHOT

The other day as my dad and I were shuffling through the closet trying to find something, we ended up coming across this vintage Polaroid camera! It is so cool and still fully functioning! I tried taking a few pictures with it today but I can't seem to get it to work, which is very unfortunate because I was so excited to see the results. If my success rate starts to go up I will defiantly put the pictures on here!
Wish me luck with my new discovery!

BEIRUT

Last night I went to the most amazing concert that I have ever been to. They are my favorite band and incredible musicians and If you don't know who they are you are missing out!! They are called Beirut, they play amazing music that will change your life. So last night was their concert and it was incredible! I got there really early so that I could make sure that I was close, and I was! I was standing probably two rows from the stage and the music and energy just consumed me. It was amazing. So after the mind blowing concert I really wanted to meet the lead singer, who also plays a million instruments, Zach Condon. So I dashed into the parking lot over to where the bus was and I see him about to get into the bus, so now Im yelling like a crazy person "wait! wait!!" and he does.  I feel bad for causing a huge scene because the next thing you know there are a million girls around! He was so nice though and didn't seem to mind, he even waited through my mom trying to figure out the camera and accidentally taking a video! So I got a rather funny picture with him and he also signed my CD! So here are some pictures from the concert, and if you don't know Beirut, look them up!

Me and Zach Condon! I was so excited, hence why I look overly ecstatic!

Alexa Chung Inspired

After posting my previous post, I got into the mood to create another layout. So I jumped onto Polyvore and this is what I came up with! I first saw this photo of Alexa Chung and decided to create an outfit based off of the vibe I got from the picture. This outfit is for a high fashion girl who wants both a touch of class and a bit of edge.

The Other Side of Me

In addition to fashion design, I also really like graphic design. The section of graphic design that peaks my interest the most is creating magazine layouts, and art direction. This is a project that I did for school, I created a magazine page talking about the grungy and girly melding of styles. Let me know what you think!

Im Back!

So sorry that I have disappeared for the past few days! I was not feeling well, then I went to the beach and was preoccupied! In addition to everything that has been going on around me, I have been thinking a lot about this summer, fashion, art, and everything else. I just visited one of my friends from RISD and it made me miss everything, and everyone so much! It is so frustrating being a junior in high school and having to focus on putting all of my time and energy into things that frankly I do not care about and really don't want to be doing. Also, It is horrible having no time what so ever to express any of my creative energy. It is stressful because this is the time that I am supposed to be really working and perfecting my skills, but when you don't have any time It can really get pretty aggravating! I am an art student, I love fashion and art and that Is what I want to spend all of my energy on again. I want to focus on the things that I love and the things that are going to be valuable to me in my life and not these things that will be valuable for someone who wants to live a life that is polar opposite to the one I want. I have less than two years left stuck in this position, and while that may not seem like a lot of time It feels like a million years! I am good at being creative, not being stuck in this factory like system that they call high school. I know that I must still continue to focus and work hard on the things I don't want to be doing but Its a lot harder that I thought It would be. But I am going to jump the hurdle and look at it as one of the many obstacles that I will have to face in my life. I have drive and I know what I want and I am not going to let anything get in my way, especially high school. I am an artist I am a designer and I will be creative!

My Next Project

As the fall season begins to emerge so does my next project. I have decided to make a coat! I first decided to make a coat when I was at RISD this summer and we went to the fabric store where I found this amazing blue, black, and white tweed fabric. It was just so cozy and beautiful that I knew that was what I had to do with it! It is my first coat and I do have to admit that I am rather nervous, but I'm the type of person that 1) does not let a challenge pass her by and 2) believes that it is better to learn by doing. So I am just going to jump into the project and hope that everything turns out well! So here is my design for my first coat ever! Wish me luck!
